Portugal achieved the best classification ever in European Handball Championships.

The National Team finished EHF EURO 2020 in sixth position, and it was the great sensation of the competition.

Portugal was part of group D, along with one of the competition's hosts, Norway, Bosnia and powerful France. It was a very complicated group but the portuguese players proved to be up to the challenge.

The National Team debuted in the competition with a fantastic victory over France by 28-25. A victory over Bosnia followed, and with the Main Round qualification guaranteed, Portugal lost to Norway in the third and final group stage game.

After a fantastic qualification for the next stage, the objective was set: achieve the best classification ever in a European Championship, which was until now the 7th place.

Portugal started the Main Round with a fantastic victory over Sweden, by a difference of 10 goals (35-25). Then followed two defeats with Iceland and Slovenia, which swept away the semi-final dream.

A victory over Hungary, however, gave the possibility of reaching the main objective, making the best record ever in Europeans, and Portugal did not tremble. In the decisive game, they beat the Hungarians 34-26, and qualified for the 5th and 6th place.

The National Team ended up saying goodbye to the European with a defeat against Germany, finishing the race in 6th place, but that in no way tarnishes the fantastic performance that Portugal had in the competition.
